(Diodia virginiana)
Identification:
Virginia Buttonweed is a spreading, deep-rooted broadleaf weed. It grows low to the ground with long, branching stems. Leaves are narrow, dark green, and grow opposite each other. Small white flowers with four petals often appear in summer.
Control Methods
Mechanical Control:
-
Hand-pull when soil is moist. Get all roots any piece left behind can regrow.
-
Mow high to reduce stress on turfgrass and help it compete.
Chemical Control:
-
Use a selective herbicide labeled for broadleaf weeds. Choose one with 2,4-D, Dicamba, or MSM (metsulfuron).
-
Apply when actively growing usually late spring through early fall.
-
Repeated applications may be needed.
Chemical Timing & Rates
-
First application: Late spring or early summer, when weeds are young.
-
Repeat: Every 2 - 4 weeks as needed.
-
Example product: MSM Turf at 0.5 - 1 oz per acre. Always follow label directions.
Note: Buttonweed thrives in wet, poorly drained soil. Improve drainage and reduce watering to discourage regrowth.
