How to Identify It

Quick ID

Growth Form

  • Spreading, bushy tree with no central stem (Texas A&M)

Foliage

  • Dark green masses of slender, sharp-pointed leaves
  • Resin glands leave white specks on the leaves (Texas A&M)

Fruit

  • Red or reddish brown when mature, usually one seed (Texas A&M)

Resprouts

  • Resprouts from stumps after disturbance (Texas A&M)

Look-Alikes

Ashe Juniper

  • Ashe juniper has blue berries and dies when cut at ground level; redberry has red fruit and resprouts (Texas A&M, Brush Busters)

Counter script: "If it is a bushy cedar with no central trunk, red berries, and it sprouts back after cutting, it is most likely redberry juniper."

Where It Grows

Texas

  • West, West-Central, and North-Central Texas (Brush Busters)
  • Ecoregions (Texas A&M): Blackland Prairies, Cross Timbers and Prairies, Edwards Plateau, Rolling Plains, High Plains, Trans-Pecos

Oklahoma

New Mexico

Sites and soils: Most common on dry rocky or gravelly soils: open hills, arroyos, canyons, slopes, plains, flats, creeks, and drainages (Texas A&M).

Best Time to Control

Seedlings under 2 ft tall are easy to kill (Brush Busters). Larger plants resprout, so mechanical work must remove the basal knob.

Redberry juniper is a woody perennial. No pre-emergent herbicide controls redberry juniper.

Treatment Methods

Mechanical (Grubbing)

  • Grub out the plant below the basal knob; cutting above it leads to resprouts (Brush Busters)
  • Treat seedlings while they are small (Brush Busters)
