Cynodon dactylon
Common Name
Bermudagrass (undesirable or invasive bermudagrass)
Latin Name
Cynodon dactylon
Family
Poaceae (Grass family)
Life Cycle / Type
Perennial · Grassy
Bermudagrass is a warm-season perennial grass that spreads aggressively by stolons above ground and rhizomes below ground. Leaves are fine-textured and pointed, and the plant forms a dense, creeping mat. When bermudagrass invades areas where it is not desired, such as flower beds, fescue lawns, zoysia, or ornamental landscapes, it becomes one of the most difficult weeds to control due to its extensive underground network.
Full sun and high heat
Compacted clay loam soils
Disturbed soil along edges, beds, and hardscapes
Weak or stressed competing turf
Lack of physical edging or barriers
Drought stress that suppresses less aggressive turf species
Bermudagrass dominates when other turf cannot compete.
A healthy, thick lawn is the best defense against weeds.
